What is GROT

During logging of Swedish forests, a large amount of biomass is left behind, and a portion of the trees' potential is therefore wasted. This portion is called GROT, which stands for branches and tops. During machine logging, the stems are stripped of branches and tops because these parts are not thick or straight enough for timber production. The leftovers are then scattered around the logging area and are sometimes collected and piled up. The main current use of GROT is for heat and energy production. GROT is then chipped using machines into a mixed wood chip made up of various tree species and components. There is generally no distinction made between GROT that consists mainly of deciduous or coniferous trees. However, the energy content differs depending on the types of trees included.

Across Sweden, different amounts of GROT are collected from logging operations depending on whether there are enough resources and logistics to make use of it. The margins for utilizing GROT are often small and depend on how accessible the logging residues are. There is simply an untapped potential in the leftovers, which highlights the need for new and innovative applications. There are companies and research institutes currently exploring the possibilities of GROT, but no one has yet launched a commercially available GROT-based product for the interior design industry on the market.

Final Words

First of all we want to thank our project owner David Eklöf who has supported us throughout the project.
We also want to thank Micke at Landeryds Golfklubb who has given us valueable feedback during this project.
Finally a big shoutout to the workshop personel who has helped us with creating the prototypes and pushed the limits of what is possible to achive with limited resources.
